Synology RackStation RS3617xs+ dual 10GbE link aggregation LACP
Out of the box the Synology RackStation RS3617xs+ comes with 4 x 1GbE & 2 x 10GbE ports. In order to provide a higher total bandwidth for multiple 10GbE video editing workstations, LACP can be enabled to increase throughput.
Step one is to source a suitable 10GbE switch such has the D-Link DXS-1210-10TS with its included 8 10GBase-T Ports and 2 SFP+ ports.
It is also recommended to connect and configure from one of the other 4 x 1GbE Lan ports to allow connection to the NAS in the event the Bond setup fails and the unit can no longer resolve an IP address for management.
The RS3617+ ports of LAN 5 & LAN 6 need to be selected with Link Aggregation mode of IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic Link Aggregation
Next from the D-Link switch head to L2 Features > Link Aggregation
Select the ports you connected the Synology NAS, set mode to Passive and click Add.
(Leaving Mode to On instead of Active or Passive will report the link as failed within the Synology)
Once correctly enabled the Synology will report the Bond Network Status as 20000 Mbps. With this now enabled a selection of Mac Pros, Macbook Pros with Thunderbolt 10GbE USB C adapters and Windows workstation computers can now connect over the 10GbE links with more network overhead.
With standard spinning disks configured in RAID 10 the hard drive throughput should max out before the network does.
